Reflecting 12 – Darillium

Today is the one year anniversary of Peter Capaldi announcing he would leave Doctor Who at Christmas on Radio 2. A year later, I know most Twelve fans are still mourning but they will accept our new star Jodie Whittaker when it starts in Autumn.

Today, I wanted to discuss 12 at Darillium as it a touching subject to me as both of them deserved each other.

Backstory:

In 2008 when David Tennant was the Doctor, we first met this charming character who sacrificed herself to save the Doctor. River said,

“Funny thing is, this means you’ve always known how I was going to die. All the time we’ve been together, you knew I was coming here. The last time I saw you, the real you — the future you, I mean — you turned up on my doorstep, with a new haircut and a suit. You took me to Darillium to see the singing towers. Oh, what a night that was! The towers sang and you cried. You wouldn’t tell me why, but I suppose you knew it was time. My time. Time to come to the Library. You even gave me your screwdriver; that should’ve been a clue.“

Now in 2011 mini episode which you can see on YouTube called Last Night, we are mislead into thinking that the future Doctor and River attend Darillium however he lies his way out of it.

But what do you see from that quote above that misleads us:

In River’s view, she is younger to him

When he goes to Darillium, the Doctor is played by Peter Capaldi .

The Doctor is the suit which he has worn before.

He wears a different suit that River hasn’t seen before.

Back to the proper scene!!!

He gives the sonic screwdriver which looks different to the original one so when you see in it her first appearance it’s looks broken. I can definitely say thinking about this it kinda makes me feel emotional and blush when she kisses him and in return compliments her. WHAT A GENTLEMAN! He then shows her the towers where he sheds a tear which River notices and asks him if he is crying which he tries to defend its the wind. She confides that her diary is nearly full and she asks him about the rumours which he says, “Spoilers!” He gives a speech which for me is overwhelming as I can think about it that he does care and then goes into a dialogue meant for River. She asks him how long a night is on Darillium and he says 24 years which means they have a life together which later leads to him being devastated and very sad.

As a fan, I feel this a great scene and I can totally relate to other shows with a complicated relationship and Peter and Alex did a great job. It just makes you feel like you want to cry and is the best speech of the entire history of Doctor Who in my opinion.
