Leigh Talks – Romance

Hi, welcome back to the second edition of Leigh Talks as I talk about romance in Doctor Who and some kind fan have given their permission to use their quotes in this blog so thank you! Let’s get started.

I love romance in Doctor Who and have grown with since I started the show  as many of you will know I am more familiar with revival who since 2006 when I watched the full series proper series and the first ever Christmas special from 2015 and caught up on S1 that I might have watched but unsure. Chemistry is important in a romantic relationship an in the show, they may be ones I don’t like but most of them I do like.

Here are two love stories that I don’t like

Tenth Doctor and Rose shouldn’t have been together and this is why I don’t give S2 higher recognition. The attitude, the jealousy, their goodbye is too emotional, rose makes too much of a fuss for me and I don’t why she says “I love you!” Rose is 19 and yet should not be in a relationship with an older man.`

Clara Oswald and Danny Pink were a disaster for me and they should have been n love, it kind of the ruins the dynamic of my favourite paring when Danny is involved and it make me sad as people give Clara a hard time cause she loves Danny and Kill the Moon makes me say, Clara no, get back, don’t listen to PE!” S8 might have gone into my Top 3 but this just doesn’t do it for me.

I will now discuss my favourite relationship which many fo my followers are not a really fan of and I respect that and its the Eleventh/Twelfth Doctors and River Song. I love these guys and are a few of my favourite characters. I totally love this relationship in S6 which is my second favourite series. The kiss and flirting in the premier was brilliant and it was like, “he must fancy her now!” In 2015, I love the last 20 minutes of the Christmas specials that year is so beautiful and means a lot to me, I would have love to seen more at Darillium but it worked for me and Peter and Alex deserve the application for these scenes.

I would love to give a special shout out to the Whouffaldi fans as I love Twice and Clara Oswald together and I did do a blog that you can check out on why I love these guys but Mummy on the Orient Express is probably the one that we can ship the most as there were picture of scenes we should have seen and bits that were never filmed but we can create in a story or an art and that is what fans are there for. Thanks Whouffaldi fans.

I think Doctor Who should have romance as long it’s not the Doctor and his companions or guest stars as it didn’t work with the Tenth Doctor but it worked with Eleven and Twelve. It works well with companions like Ian and Barbara and Amy and Rory who are a few people that have impressed me with their storylines.

Here are the some of the replies to whether romance should be used in Doctor who.

I have no problem with it, as long as it doesn’t become central to the plot or characters. It’s part of life. It’s relatable . It worked in favour with Amy and Rory’s story, Also with the Doctor and River. The only time i would i have a problem with it, is if the show became too “soap opera-y”.

A little romance is good, as long as it does not take on a life of it’s own. If the Doctor wants a little fling, he should have one, just as the companions do and yes the Doctor can have a fling with one of his companions. It’s not a sin. I would hope they do that with the 13, have a guy scientist have a thing for the Doctor, he wines & dines her, and see what happens. Or the Doctor tries and wines & dines a female and forgets that some don’t swing both ways and/or some do. Then that means, Doctor doesn’t understand humans as well as she thought.

I am fine with romance just are little but I felt it become over used in the modern Who era through Rose and Amy period

Im fine with romance in Doctor Who but I’m more interested in a alien-human relationship than human-human relationships ??‍♀️

@VixofTardis

I think romance in Doctor Who is fine in general, though it shouldn’t necessarily be the main plot point. Romance with the Doctor is fine, but I really didn’t like Ten and Rose, because I didn’t like Rose. I would have enjoyed it more if it was with someone I liked.

@laurelworlds

Romance is fine as long as it is not The Doctor being romantic.  The Doctor should always be an enigma of sorts. Alien, wise, brilliant, brave, and wounded.

Romance with a companion should never happen again.  As with real life, it can get in the way of friendship, loyalties.

I don’t mind romance among the companions. Amy-Rory was just fine. But the Doctor should never cross the line and fall in love with his/her companions. Romance clouds your judgement as loyal friendship does not.

That is it for the second of edition of Leigh Talks and thanks to the people who got involved.
