Leigh’s Speech Breakdown: Clara’s Listen Speech

This is my new blog feature where I discuss a speech or monologue from the Whoniverse and break down the important bits.

My first breakdown is centered around Clara Oswald and something she spoke in Listen to the younger Doctor in a Barn on Gallifrey.

Listen

Listen. Listen. This is just a dream. But very clever people can hear dreams. So please, just listen. I know you’re afraid. But being afraid is all right. Because didn’t anybody ever tell you? Fear is a super power. Fear can make you faster, and cleverer, and stronger. And one day, you’re going to come back to this barn, and on that day, you’re going to be very afraid indeed. But that’s okay. Because if you’re very wise and very strong, fear doesn’t have to make you cruel or cowardly. Fear can make you kind. It doesn’t matter if there’s nothing under the bed, or in the dark, so long as you know it’s okay to be afraid of it. So listen. If you listen to nothing else, listen to this. You’re always going to be afraid, even if you learn to hide it. Fear is like…a companion. A constant companion, always there. But that’s okay, because fear can bring us together. Fear can bring you home. I’m going to leave you something, just so you’ll always remember — fear makes companions of us all!”

The scene is set in a barn where the War Doctor found The Moment that would be used to destroy Gallifrey to end the Time War and his future incarnations (10 & 11) but luckily was stopped by Clara who told them to be a Doctor and end up freezing Gallifrey Who is later found by Hell Bent after the Time Lords trick the Doctor in The confession Dial due to the actions of Ashildir which ends up causing Clara’s death and when the Doctor returns to Gallifrey, he visits the Barn which he resides for a few days before confronting Rassilion. In the speech, Clara mentions the barn and tells the Doctor he will be afraid of whatever happens on the day he returns.

I think this speech is trying to say that fear is not a bad thing and it can makes us more powerful and can be useful to children who are scared and probably Clara’s best moment and I think people who don’t like  Clara should respect this monologue as this shows why the Doctor needs someone like Clara who is kind and is one of my inspirational characters in the series.

I like the way that Clara says fear is a friend rather than a enemy and something to be scared of and is very memorable for us to look back at.
